Asmaa’ Binti Yazid by Dr Muhammad Al Arifi.

Asmaa’ Binti Yazid Ibn-Salkan was a woman from the Ansar and a Companion of the Prophet (SAWS). She was distinguished for her sagacity and eloquence. She was nicknamed “Orator of all Women.” She was also a woman of learning and reported the Prophet SAWS’s Ahadith. She was a reliable Reporter and a total of 81 Hadiths are reported by Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah, as well as other Major Scholars of Hadith.
Asmaa was also keen on jihad, joining Muslim armies on several occasions. She accompanied the Prophet on the expedition that led to the conquest of Makkah. She also participated in the great battle of Al-Yarmuk against the Byzentines during the reign of Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (RA). She is reported to have killed nine enemy soldiers during the battle of Uhud, using the pole of her own tent.
One day she came to the Prophet SAWS as he was sitting with a number of his companions. She said “O Messanger of Allah, may both my parents be sacrificed for you.” This is a traditional phrase used figuratively. “I am an emissary from the women. God has sent you as a Messenger for both men and women. We believe in you and in Allah. Yet, we are restricted and home bound. We stay in your homes, give you your pleasure, and bear your children. You men have been favoured over us with attending Friday prayers and congregational prayers in mosques, visiting the sick, attending funerals, offering the pilgrimage repeatedly, and above all, going on jihad. When a man goes on pilgrimage or jihad, we take care of your property, sew your clothes, and raise your children. Do we have a share of your reward?”
The Prophet SAWS turned to his companions and asked them: “Have you heard a better statement by a woman than this one, who is asking about matters of her faith?” They replied: “We would not have thought that a woman would ever be able to express such meanings as this lady.”
The Prophet SAWS turned to Asmaa and said: “Inform other women who sent you that a woman who is a goodly wife, keen to please her husband is equal to all that.” She left, glorifying Allah.
The Prophet SAWS’s words stress that women are equal in their faith and reward. A woman should try to ensure the atmosphere in her home is relaxed and pleasant.
