Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Decree)

Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Decree) is one of the most sacred nights in Islam, as mentioned in the Quran:

“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:1-3)

Which Night Could Be Laylatul Qadr?

According to the Quran and Sunnah, the exact night of Laylatul Qadr is unknown, but it is most likely to be found in the last ten nights of Ramadan, specifically on the odd-numbered nights:

1. Narration from the Prophet ﷺ:
• Aisha (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 2017, Sahih Muslim 1169)

2. The Strongest Possibilities:
• The most commonly cited nights are 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night of Ramadan.
• Many scholars believe the 27th night is the most probable, based on several hadiths.
• However, Laylatul Qadr could occur on any of the odd nights, including tonight (25th Ramadan).

3. Why the Exact Date is Unknown?
• The Prophet ﷺ was about to inform the Sahaba of the exact night but was made to forget it due to a quarrel between two companions.
• This teaches us to strive in worship throughout the last ten nights, rather than focusing on just one.

What Should You Do Tonight (25th Ramadan)?

Since tonight is an odd night in the last ten days, it could be Laylatul Qadr. It is recommended to:
• Pray extra (Tahajjud, Qiyam-ul-Lail)
• Recite Quran and do Dhikr
• Make lots of Du’a, especially:

اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni
“O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love to forgive, so forgive me.” (Tirmidhi 3513)
• Give charity and help others

Since the 26th night (tomorrow night) is also an even-numbered night, it’s still good to continue extra worship, as some scholars say Laylatul Qadr can fall on any of the last ten nights, not just the odd ones.
